"Mata Ortiz Today"
$29.95
On the high dusty plains of Chihuahua, Mexico an exciting pottery movement has emerged. The story began when one man, Juan Quezada, became inspired by the ancient pottery of the Casa Grandes culture and decided to invent a process for creating hand-formed pottery. Today, in the small village of MAta Ortiz, Mexico over 400 of the 2002 inhabitants make pottery. In the 30 years since Juan Quezada's initial experiments the artists of Mata Ortiz have made incredible technical and aesthetic advances and collectors around the world have responded. Just as the potters transform the humblest materials into precious works of art they have also transformed their impoverished pueblo into a thriving art center.
In this video you go on the road to visit Mata Ortiz and meet many ogf the artists as they describe, in their own words, their relationship to the ancient Casa Grandes work, demonstrate the pottery process and discuss their personal styles.
